Watering your Lawn

Watering your Lawn

Whilst lawns are fairly robust and can recover well from prolonged dry spells, grass is weaker at this time leaving it prone to infestation of weeds and or diseases.

Key Points:

  • When watering try to provide a good soaking rather than just a sprinkling to encourage stronger root development
  • Water in drought no more than twice a week, the temptation is to lightly sprinkle every day but this can lead to moss growth and weak rooting system
  • Water when grass looses its spring like feel and BEFORE it starts to turn brown
  • In cooler dry weather watering every 10 days is ample
  • Good aeration (spiking) helps the soil to tackle drought times more effectively
  • Do not cut grass short, will encourage moss
  • Only leave weed free clippings on lawn in times of drought
  • Top dress in Autumn
  • Remove “thatch” by scarifying in late Autumn or Spring (not summer)
